Habitat for Humanity
We will once again be joining with other churches in the North Oakland Circle of Faith (NOCOF) to build a Habitat for Humanity home in Pontiac this summer. The NOCOF and the SOCOF will work together to build one of 2 homes in the Ferry Farms neighborhood (south of Osmun St. and east of Woodward). We will be building at 184 Elm Street. The construction program is very different this year. It will begin with a one-week Building on Faith "Blitz" June 15-20 and continue every Saturday (except July 4) through August 22. This is how registration will work this year:
The NOCOF/SOCOF house will cost approximately $90,000 to build and will require 204 construction volunteers
Twenty-two congregations pledged funds to the house and will receive volunteer "slots"
The number of volunteer "slots" each congregation receives will correspond to its contribution of funds as a percent of the home's cost. So, for example, if a congregation contributed ten percent toward the home's cost, that congregation would receive ten percent of the volunteer "slots". Waterford Central United Methodist Church has pledged $2,000 to this build, so we will only have 4 volunteer "slots". There will also be no choice as to what date or task you will have. Our 4 slots have been assigned on Saturday August 8. I do not know what tasks will happen that day, probably something like paint and finish carpentry. The 4 slots available to our church will be held until May 10. On May 11, any slots still unfilled will be opened to the ENTIRE NOCOF and SOCOF. Any remaining slots will be opened to the general public on June 1, however; I don't think there will be any slots left at that time, so don't wait.
Registration is now open. To register as a volunteer, go to www.habitatoakland.org. During the registration process you will be asked: "DO YOU HAVE A JOIN CODE?"
The code for Waterford CUMC is: JOIN CODE: HOPE
You must have this code when you register. If you enter the code and no slots show up, that means our 4 slots are full. If you don't get one of our 4 slots, check to see if there are any slots left on May 11 when they open registration up to everyone in both Circles of Faith. Important dates in the 2009 Building on Faith campaign:
June 1 Construction volunteer registration opens to the general public
June 1Construction volunteer registration opens to the general public

June-August "Slow Build" construction continues on consecutive Saturdays
Sept. 14 Building of Faith Sunday (2010 campaign kickoff event)

Any contributions towards our $2,000 pledge will be greatly appreciated. We already have about $1,400 of that amount. Checks should be made to CUMC with Habitat in the note field. In His Service, Francie Bauer, 248-634-2817.
