Blessings in a Backpack
Blessings in a Backpack is an outreach opportunity to help feed hungry children in our area! Over 80% of the children at Sandburg Elementary School are on the federally subsidized free or reduced fee lunch program! But what happens to them on the weekends; do they have food to eat?!?
The mission of Blessings in a Backpack is to provide backpacks with food for those children and their families over the weekends throughout the school year. It costs $100 per child, per school year to make sure those children receive the nourishment they need. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program.
Latest Update
Blessings in a Backpack is off and running at Sandburg Elementary in Waterford!!! Members of the steering committee showed up to pack the first week of backpacks and to learn the process. It was a lot of fun and it took less than an hour! It was a very amazing thing to see the fruit of our planning and labor pay off with backpacks filled with food for those kids. I will be uploading pictures of the packing and will try and do regular updates on how the program is doing.
Getting Involved
There are many ways that you can help! Volunteers are needed to help unload the delivery of food, to help pack the backpacks, and of course through donations. We are so proud of this program and would love any support that you can help provide.
